In response to Ryan's suggestion and Joe's response...another option would be donating frequent flier miles. You'd have to pick an airline to go with, and I'm not sure how complicated it is, but I have seen other appeals for that kind of thing. It doesn't "cost" anything to those who donate them and I know I have miles on a couple of different airlines that I'm unlikely to use before they expire. It would at least cut done on one of the major costs.

I suggested a $1 per CX Race Entry "non olympic event" tax built into USAC's fee structure on Twitter recently.

I think that the privately run "cross funds" like in the past are not the best method, as you continue to not fix the system. We can't make USAC do anything with their existing funds, even though we pay for CX licenses, but perhaps we can convince them that we, as the CX Community, are willing to take a $1 hit per race entry which they can collect from the promoter with their insurance fees.

Put that in a fund managed by Gully etc. to fund all U23's for the worlds trip, then the Juniors, if money allows. I think over the course of a year, the numbers would easily work out.

Thanks to everyone for the comments! I have safely made it back to the states and am looking forward to the off season.

Ryan, those are some great ideas. I tried to do a fundraiser for my trip over last year, but was only mildly successful. USA Cycling did fund several athletes at the camp this year, but it was only because there was extra funding left over from earlier in the season. In the past the camp has not been funded, and only a few riders are funded each year for the Worlds. The funded riders still have to pay to get there, but they are covered for costs incurred once there. For everyone else at the Worlds for example, they have to pay for their trip there and then a team fee for transportation, food, team clothing etc.

In short, racing internationally becomes hugely expensive very quickly. However, I think doses of high level international racing plays a crucial role in rider development, and anything we can do to defray costs would be very beneficial.

This was fun to read. I question as a co-promoter, could we be doing something to help these young guns or more of them from the MABRA/MAC area get over there...scholarship based on a $1 donation at our BikeReg page or take a dollar from each entry? Collectively over 10 races in the MABRA and 10 races in the MAC, we could probably raise $10,000. Something to think about for 2010.

Excellent interview. I'll second what Lindsey said, it was really interesting to hear details about starts and call-ups that you don't normally hear.

Great interview Joe and Bill. I've read a lot of interviews from folks racing there, and I've never been clear how the starts go down. I'd love to go over sometime just to spectate a few races and cheer on the American racers (in a rowdy, drunk fashion like the locals.) It's good to experience that cutthroat racing I suppose, but I appreciate that in the U.S., we tend to actually like the people we race against. Good luck to Joe on his remaining races!
