AFI: Heusden-Zolder-World Championship (Day 1)

YESSSSSSSS, finally its World Champs time! The BIG WEEKEND IS HEEEEERRRREEE!

I know I’ve said it before, but I do think it’s more of an achievement to win a series than to be the one who got it right on one day, but it’s Rainbows up for grabs and the one race lottery is the way it goes. It’s also the weekend where we meet riders who have not ridden in Belgium before or who ride other disciplines and, for some reason, decide to get their CX on. AFI … Hoogerheide

[Editor’s Note: And yet another “A Fan In” posts to file under “Better Late Than Never.”  The races may be memories but the stories are still worth sharing.]

Another weekend and another World Cup. We head over the border to the Netherlands town of Hoogerheide, which means one thing … data roaming!

I like this course. Or should I say, I did, but I had been told of changes so I was looking forward, with some trepidation, to seeing what that was all about.

AFI … BK Lille

[Editor’s Note: And yet another “A Fan In” posts to file under “Better Late Than Never.” My apologies again to Cat Armour and the viewing public for my tardiness in getting these posted. The races may be memories but the stories are still worth sharing.]

Not sure if CXNats counts as a part of CXmas or not but it does mark the end of the festive season and the wind up to Worlds and the sharp end of the season. Things start to get really serious for the rest of January. For the riders, anyway …

AFI: Diegem

On the fourth day of CXmas we got the floodlights of DIEGEM.

Last year we stood in freeing cold ice and snow and despite my feet being frozen blocks I thoroughly enjoyed the spectacle. This year the weather is unseasonably warm and I still haven’t had to wear gumboots to a race. Last year also, I came by train and met up with The Guys by Niels Albert (yes, we used Niels as a PLACE to meet!) This year we drove right past Niels and headed for the top of the course by the beer tent straight away! Well, it was a late start and by the time we got to the course it was well past beer o’clock! In fact, by the time we got there Jappe Jaspers was well on the way to overwinning again and much of the spectatorship were about 4 or 5 sheets to the wind! (That’s nautical misspeak to say a bit squiffy with the intent on becoming totally plastered) Continue reading “AFI: Diegem”

AFI: Namur

On the second day of CXmas there was CITADELCROSS.

With all the ease of traveling and parking we have had over the season so far it was inevitable that we would have a problem sometime or other. That day was today. The Tomtom that has served so well got lost on the outskirts of Namur sending us merrily along the small roads on the wrong side of the river and heading into roads closed for Sunday markets! The guys finally turned it off and headed for the citadel, which you can’t really miss, but finding the free parking required stopping and asking directions halfway up the back of the hill! But YAY! we got there! Continue reading “AFI: Namur”

AFI: Antwerp (Scheldecross)

On the first day of CXmas there was SCHELDECROSS.

I had not been to Scheldecross before, in fact, despite having stayed in Antwerp and been to the city on several other occasions, I had never been on the other side of the river to the linkerover (left bank as it were). It involves getting a bus which was easy after I found the bus stop sneakily hidden down a side road. Getting to the other side is through a long tunnel. This is significant because (a) I hate tunnels (b) I just signed up to run a trail in Antwerp which will incorporate said tunnel. (F**K) Continue reading “AFI: Antwerp (Scheldecross)”
